Who we are
Musika is a marketplace app for university students in Zimbabwe. For anything in this document, contact musikaecommerce@gmail.com.
This policy is written with the Zimbabwe Data Protection Act (Chapter 11:12) in mind.
What we collect
When you sign in
- From Google: your name, email address and profile photo. Nothing else — we do not ask Google for your contacts, calendar, or anything beyond your basic profile.
- If you use an emailed code: your email address.
- Your phone number, only if you choose to add one. It is verified by SMS and is never shown to anyone unless you switch it on for a specific listing.
When you use the app
- Your listings — what you are selling or offering, the price, and any photos you upload.
- Your university, if you choose one. You can skip this and use Musika without telling us.
- Messages between you and other users.
- Views on listings, counted once per person per day.
- Saves, follows and reviews.
- A notification token for your device, so we can tell you when someone replies.
- Feedback you send us, including any rating and message.
What we do not collect
- Your contacts. Musika never reads your phonebook. People find each other through invite links and by following shops — that is a deliberate choice, not an oversight.
- Your location. We know which university you picked, if you picked one. Nothing more precise.
- Payment details. Musika never handles money. You pay the seller directly when you meet.
Who can see what
| This | Is seen by |
| Your name, photo and shop name | Everyone, including people who are not signed in |
| Your listings and their photos | Everyone |
| Reviews you write, and your rating as a seller | Everyone |
| Who you follow, and who follows a shop | Everyone |
| Your phone number | Only signed-in users, only on listings where you switched it on |
| Your email address | Nobody. It is never shown in the app |
| Your messages | Only you and the person you are talking to |
| Listings you saved | Only you. Sellers see how many people saved something, never who |
| Your university | Only you. It affects your feed, and is not shown on your profile |
Why we collect it
- To run the marketplace — showing listings, delivering messages, letting buyers reach sellers.
- To keep it safe — investigating reports, suspending accounts that scam or abuse people.
- To make it useful — your university and what you have opened decide the order of your feed. This happens on your phone, not on a server, and it is arithmetic rather than a profile of you.
Who we share it with
We do not sell your data, and we do not share it for advertising. It is handled by three services on our behalf:
- Supabase — the database and file storage behind the app.
- Expo and Google Firebase — delivering push notifications to your phone.
- Brevo — sending the sign-in codes we email you.
We will also hand over information where the law requires it.
How long we keep it
Your account and its listings stay until you delete them. Messages stay so both people keep their record of a deal. Notifications older than a few months are cleared. If you ask us to delete your account, we remove your profile, listings, messages and reviews.
Your rights
Under the Data Protection Act you can ask us to:
- tell you what we hold about you
- correct anything wrong — most of it you can edit yourself in the app
- delete your account and its data — how to do that
- stop sending you notifications, which you can also do in the app under Notification settings
Email musikaecommerce@gmail.com and we will answer within a reasonable time. There is no charge.
Children
Musika is for university students and is not intended for under-16s. If you believe a child has an account, tell us and we will remove it.
Security, honestly
Every table in our database has row-level rules deciding who may read what, so one person cannot read another's messages even if they modify the app. Phone numbers are locked away at the column level and only released by a function that checks who is asking.
No system is perfect. Musika is early software built by a small team, and you should not put anything in a message that would seriously harm you if it leaked.
Changes
If this policy changes in a way that matters, we will say so in the app rather than quietly editing this page.
